Amotorcycle rider, Nathaniel Omale, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly impersonating a military officer.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Omale, who was allegedly performing illegal duties in military uniform, was a trainee at a disbanded merchant navy school.

The 35-year-old was reportedly arrested at the Apapa area of Lagos by a Nigerian Navy personnel attached to the Task Force on Traffic Decongestion.

Confessing to the crime, Omale said he bought the military uniform for N5,000 for the purpose of using it for illegal escort of trucks and commercial vehicles, adding that he had been using the uniform for almost 11 years.

He stated, “I was made to join the merchant navy training school in 2007. After three months, naval officials from the NSS Beecroft sent us out of the camp, because the school was illegal. We had yet to get uniform before the training was stopped but I bought the uniform from a man, who claimed to be a warrant officer, at the rate of N5,000.

"I bought the uniform with the intention of escorting vehicles. I am not an armed robber and I don’t have any gang.”

Omale was arraigned on two counts of impersonation.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Abiola Adewale, said the offences contravened sections 411 and 77 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The charges read in part, “That you, Nathaniel Omale, and others now at large, on October 30, 2018, around 8.30am, at Apapa, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; impersonation.”

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The presiding magistrate, Mr W. A. Salami, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum.

Salami adjourned the case till January 16, 2019.
