Obiano gives 5 Weeks Ultimatum to Ogboji – Onneh -Achina -Peter University Road Project

 After protests and appeals by the Achina community to the Anambra State government led by Governor Willie Obiano to intervene in the devastating erosion menace caused by abandonment of the Ogboji – Onneh -Achina -Peter University road, Governor Obiano weekend gave the contractor handling the road five weeks ultimatum to to deliver the project.
Governor Obiano, who disclosed that he paid the contractor two weeks ago, said he came to make sure that the funds released are being properly utilized on the 14.1 kilometre road.
The Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor in his remarks announced that the project is seventy-five percent completed, noting that with the assurances given by the contractor, the road hopefully will be delivered in record time.
The contractor handling the project, Mr. Izuchukwu Ibeneme claimed that earthwork , drainage have been concluded and applauded the Governor for granting opportunities to the youths, promised to utilize the project fund judiciously.
The Auxiliary Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Jonas-Benson Okoye thanked the Governor for embarking on the road project which he said is very strategic.
As well, Governor Obiano said the Nkwo-Ikem Nando Road Project is nearing completion.
He spoke when he paid an unscheduled inspection to the site where he was assured of completion of the project in one month’s time.
The Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor who told the people that additional four road designs have been drawn for Nando, expressing optimism that the roads will be completely executed with their support to the government of the day.
The contractor handling the project who is the Traditional Ruler of Umueri, Igwe Sir Bennett Emeka revealed that four kilometres of the road has been completely asphalted, promising that the remaining two kilometres will be completed in a months’ time.
At Umuoji, Idemmili South, the Commissioner for works, Hon. Marcel Ifejiofor assured Idemili South that work will soon recommence at the Umuoji Oba-Akwukwu road.
Ifejiofor said that the design issues have been sorted out with the STEFANUTTI contractors adding that the contractors would be back on site with their equipment to recommence work next week
“Construction will recommence at the Oba international market at Umuoji- Oba road next week. The STEFFANUTTI contractors stopped work last year due to design issues. We were having issues with them but all those have been sorted out”, Ifejiofor assured.
This id coming after the Oba people cried out to the state government to come to their rescue given the dilapidated situation of the road made worse by the grading of contractors.
The Vice president Oba Patriotic union (OPU), Nze Mike Nwachukwu urged Governor Obiano to order the contractors back to site before the rains.
“In 2017 when governor Obiano was campaigning for his re-election, he flagged off the 10.4km road, promising that not less than 1 km of the road will be asphalted from the Afor market point”
“The contractors quickly started grading the road without considering building the drainages to control flood. They later abandoned the road and it led to the collapse of the MLS school fence.
“Also many other electric poles including high tension wires collapsed leaving those area in complete black out. In fact, the roads are now impassable because of serious gully erosion caused by flood”.
Oba Youth Leader, Comrade Ikechukwu Ezeukwu pleaded: “Please, I want APGA led government to fulfil their promises”.
“Help us fix this Oba-Umuoji road. 2/3 of our youths here are university graduates but we don’t have employment and some have resorted to Okada riding to make ends meet, we need employment”, said Ezeukwu.
